California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) and the Monterey Bay Ecotourism Region (MBETR) initiative announce the 2nd Monterey Bay Sustainable Hospitality Summit on January 10 – 11, 2019 at the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey, CA.  The Summit brings together policy makers and public officials, hospitality leaders and tourism officials, and developers and educators in the hospitality, tourism and wellness industries to focus on key sustainability issues and bring together the human and physical assets of the region in an integrated manner.

The Summit is designed to inspire the Monterey Bay community and region to establish leadership in the development and implementation of sustainable practices in the hospitality, ecotourism, eco-recreation, and wellness products. Summit goals include:

  • Providing an understanding of the return on investment of sustainable practices.
  • Establishing a baseline of regional sustainable practices currently in place and possibilities of sustainable actions to pursue.
  • Acknowledging impending state regulations and providing tools for compliance.

The two-day Summit features a day of visits to view best practices in sustainable hospitality, ecotourism, eco-recreation and wellness at exemplary sites across the Tri-County region and a full day of inspiring and sharing best practices in sustainable hospitality, ecotourism, eco-recreation and wellness in the Monterey Bay region at the Portola Hotel Summit.

    • Focus: Hospitality businesses operate under state-mandated water restrictions and state-mandated urban runoff prevention regulations must be met for new construction.

  2. Reducing Single-Use Plastics from the Guest Experience and Operations
    • Focus: Awareness of the problems of single-use plastic pollution in the ocean is on the rise. Cities are banning single-use plastic service ware from use in restaurants and food operations. Santa Cruz County recently passed a ban on single-use amenities from its hotel rooms and vacation rentals.

  3. Organics to Energy and Navigating the Changing Recycling Market:
    • Focus: Managing waste from restaurants, hotels and special events is usually out of sight, and out of mind when it comes to hospitality, but this is one of the most important operational components of a sustainability. Fortunately, our region is a leader in waste management innovation, but our waste management systems are under new strain from changes in the global recycling market.

Our Convention and Visitors Bureau has launched an effective Sustainable Moments brand campaign to educate visitors on how to protect the place they have come to enjoy without ‘loving it to death.’
